The 1% Habitat House
Kansas City, Kansas
El Dorado partnered with Heartland Habitat to provide a different kind of prototype that solved problems that weren’t already being addressed by Heartland. The strategy provided a stronger connection to the outdoors in multiple ways rather than just a singular approach.
The main bathroom of the house was designed as a safe room. The tradeoff for not building a basement was to construct a room within the interior that could stand up to extreme storms. The house was built with 2×6 construction and a roof truss system, with the foundation slab fully-isolated from the framing. We provided low-tech solutions like cross ventilation, solar orientation, and a fully-integrated water collection system. Beyond those efficiencies, we provided compelling and attractive outdoor spaces so that the new owners would be inclined to hang out outside.
Through the 1+ program, el dorado inc. was among a select group of architecture firms, recognized for residential design excellence and a commitment to public service and matched to work with Habitat for Humanity affiliates. Together, el dorado and Heartland were challenged to design and build a home that exceeds Habitat’s typical design and sustainability standards.
